April 27, 2002. Saturday night.
I pulled one of my disappearing acts some months before. As a consequence, I hadn't seen or talked to my friends in some time. A few days before the 27th, a couple of my friends came into the Media Play where I was slinging books. We reconnected, and made plans to go to a DJ show. That DJ was Miguel Migs. The venue: In between Axys (shout out Gabrielle Hawkins Stewart) and Opera, there was this great club known as Eleven50. Eleven50 was bringing all the hot trance and downtempo/house DJs du jour. The night of the 27th (my friend's birthday) we all hopped in the car and headed to Midtown. On the way, we stopped to pick up a friend of one of my friends. We all introduced ourselves. She was a school mate of my friend. Understandably, she was quiet during the drive, while we were yelling over the soulful tunes of Nude Tempo One.
We stopped at a Steak N' Shake to use the bathroom because the line waiting to get into Eleven50 on show nights were notoriously long. I tried chatting with her but she wouldn't participate. She was either really shy or didn't want any of what I was serving up. Once we got into Eleven50 and settled, with our drinks, into the couches (see the pic. Yeah, we had both couches to start off the night) i started trying to talk to her again, wanting to loosen her up. I could tell that she wasn't used to the club life and I wanted to make her more comfortable. As the night wore on and Miguel Migs and Lisa Shaw were doing their thing, I kind of gave up on the girl and focused on the music, letting it transport me (and the rest of the crowd) into a blissed out groove state. That was a great night, one of the best shows I have ever seen. I would like to say the girl had something to do with it but I kept on getting the cold shoulder. The show ended, and we took the party back to a friends house. The girl disappeared from my thoughts until a few weeks later. But that is another long story.
Anyway, that girl was EGGIESALAD. And while it wasn't love at first sight, that was the first night we met. This is our origin story. So really, I have 2 reasons to look back fondly at that night. I wonder if she remembers it differently?
While this day serves as the first official day EggieSalad and I met—this is also the day, last year, that her (our) father passed. So we light a candle. I say a short prayer-type thingy. And I hope Eggie will have as peaceful day as possible.

This is me and EggieSalad’s song. Fits perfectly within our narrative.
